A Few Thoughts…

I am trying to keep semi-regular updates going, but some may just be like this – a few mindless thoughts and rants.

Firstly, a little more about me and my job. I work in a large warehouse servicing shops and caterers in my home town. It’s pretty easy work, but with long hours (7:30 – 5 on a Saturday, 9 – 4 on a Sunday) and lots of heavy lifting. I work with 3 of my friends, which makes it much easier. I try not to discriminate based on race or gender, but a few trends I have noticed are as follows:

• People of Indian or Pakistani descent are very friendly, however they tend to buy all of our reduced stock and stand right next to me when I’m trying to scan their purchases. Why this is I don’t know, but it makes my job much, much harder and frustrates me to no end.
• Asian people are quiet and polite, but buy large amounts of coke and Pepsi, and walk off without telling me if they’re bringing back more – very annoying.
• White western people are often either very rude or very friendly, and will pick up on every mistake I make, even before I can correct it, or after I’ve finished and can do nothing.

Right, now that’s out of the way I can move onto the more important points. Currently there is a scare of a global economic recession. I will not pretend to know why this is happening, I get most of my information from the BBC who are not always the most reliable, but I can see it ending badly for the world. The current ‘Panic Mode’ stock traders seem to be in is causing problems for everyone - the FTSE 100 has fallen by 5.5%, the most since 9/11. To me this seems scarily close to a Stock Market Crash, and the last time that happened we had the Great Depression. They say that those who fail to learn from History are doomed to repeat it, and I wonder if that is what is happening here. I don’t want to imagine what may happen after such an event – would parties like the NSDAP, the Fascists, the Communists, spring up again, creating a circle of violence and world wars? I hope that I would be able to rise and take a stand, but I don’t know if that would even be possible.

I am a man of Science. A simple sentence, no? But think of what it entails. It means I do not follow religion, that I believe in proof and evidence over faith and belief. I read an interesting thread on a forum about what the human race would achieve in the next 100 hundred years, and someone said that if we carried on at the rate we were going humans could be unimaginably advanced by 2100. Again, I don’t pretend to be an expert here, but I am amazed nearly every day at what science comes up with. I heard on the radio a few days ago that scientists have discovered what gene causes Leukemia. For me this is such an astonishing breakthrough, but I haven’t heard any follow-up. Hopefully we will soon though.

Can’t really think of anything else I wanted to say right now, so until next time…

A (Slightly Less Brief) Introduction

I have now discovered what happens when you try to post a blog at 6:50 in the morning and you have to go to work in 5 minutes. My title, “A Better Britain,” is not a reference to Oswald Mosley’s “A Greater Britain”, indeed I have essentially the opposite views to him and his ideals. The reason for the title is that I aim to make a “Better Britain”, a Britain that is stronger, a Britain that is safe, a Britain that is no longer a subject to the over exaggerated ‘threat’ of terrorism and internal violence.

I am not trying to claim I have all the answers and all the solutions. To have those I would have to be a god, which, sadly, I’m not. I do, however, think that as a country we can strive to undo the effects of the previous 5 or 6 governments who have slowly imposed on civil liberties in the name of safety.

I am a socialist. Possibly moving towards a communist or an anarchist depending on the current events of the world. A quick test at The Political Compass puts me further left and down than Ghandi. Is this something to be proud of? I don’t know, perhaps it’s not important. But what I do know is that while socialism is the answer for me it may not be the best for the country. The current and previous Labour governments have shown an even bigger infringement and personal rights, even though the European Human Rights Act has been in place since 1998. Clearly, if Labour is considered to be socialist than the ideals of socialism are not the way for the country.

So why did I make this blog? To show people that there is another way. We need to stop this country from reaching ‘1984′ levels of “safety”, or even the Nine Inch Nails’ “Year Zero” depiction of the future where the civil liberties of America has been destroyed (if you haven’t heard the album I highly recommend it). Please, check back regularly, post your own views, or just listen to what I have to say, and start thinking for yourselves.

A Brief Introduction

This will be a brief introduction, as I must leave soon. So, let us move on with haste.

My name is Simon Byrne. I live in Britain, and I’m sure if you tried hard enough you could find out exactly where. To me, this doesn’t matter. What does matter is politics. It may seem like a tired expression, but politics is what makes our world go round, and I am heavily interested in what is going on in the world. This is why I made this blog.

When I return I will add some more details, but please, check back regularly. I may tell you something you hadn’t heard yet. I may tell you something you hadn’t been able to put into words. I may even tell you something that you didn’t even know had happened.
